Death by WTC Dust Finally Being Addressed?
New York City’s chief medical examiner, Dr. Charles S. Hirsch, has for the first time directly linked a death to exposure to dust from the destruction of the World Trade Center.
In a letter made public yesterday, Dr. Hirsch said that he was certain “beyond a reasonable doubt” that dust from the twin towers contributed to the death of Felicia Dunn-Jones, 42, a civil rights lawyer who was engulfed on Sept. 11 as she ran from her office a block away from the trade center.
She later developed a serious cough and had trouble breathing, and she died five months after the terrorist attack.

Activists, including U.S. presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, put fresh pressure on New York City on Friday to compensate Ground Zero workers following the first confirmed death from inhaling the dust of the World Trade Center wreckage.
Clinton called on the city's chief medical examiner to examine the cases of workers and downtown Manhattan residents whose deaths and illnesses could have been caused by exposure to toxins at the site of the Twin Towers collapse and at the landfill where the wreckage was taken.

Trials are on the verge of extinction. They have been replaced by settlements
and plea deals, by mediations and arbitrations and by decisions from judges
based only on lawyers' written submissions.

Federal courts conducted about 3,600 trials in civil cases last year, down from 5,800 in 1962. That is not an enormous drop— until you consider that the number of cases has quintupled in the meantime.
In percentage terms, only 1.3 percent of federal civil cases ended in trials last year, down from 11.5 percent in 1962.
Bush Anoints Himself as the Insurer of Constitutional Government in Emergency
In a different world, citizens might welcome a bold move by their president to ensure that vital services are delivered during a time of national crisis. But from this Administration, great suspicion over motivation is warranted.
They don't govern. They seek opportunities to expand their hold on power.
Remember also that documents like this are often like icebergs: you see the tip of them, but the really scary stuff is hidden beneath the surface ( in the classified "Continuity Annexes", perhaps).
With scarcely a mention in the mainstream media, President Bush has ordered
up a plan for responding to a catastrophic attack.
In a new National
Security Presidential Directive, Bush lays out his plans for dealing with
a "catastrophic emergency." (Ed.: Full text appended at end of this article.)
The document emphasizes the need to ensure “the continued function of our form of government under the Constitution, including the functioning of the three separate branches of government,” it states.
But it says flat out: “The President shall lead the activities of the Federal Government for ensuring constitutional government.”
Influencing Human Cognition: US Electromagnetic Weapons and Human Rights
As the spectre of martial law looms, and the "need to maintain order" among the population at large in the case of a pandemic or "terrorist attack" is spoken of more often, and more openly, weaponry such as Phillips, et al reveal in this article will potentially become quite useful to this government and military. It behooves thinking citizens to know the realities of what may lay in store for the populace, horrendous as it may be. We need factual information to make good decisions--here it is.

Potential terror jurors cite 9/11 doubts
There are so many things to comment on in the short piece below, but we'll only mention a couple of them.
First, isn't it interesting that a person's views about the 9/11 attacks are now the basis for peremptory challenges during jury selection? It's certainly an effective way of weeding out opinions that don't conform to the official line - just as those who don't support the death penalty are automatically dismissed from juries.
This is an unjust and pernicious practice. By denying those who don't agree with death sentencing a place on juries, the true breadth of public opinion on the subject cannot be represented on juries. It creates an ideologically lopsided jury pool heavy with conformists. Seems the same thing is in danger of happening with 9/11.
Second, while professor Terrelli's point rings true, he doesn't mention that heightened skepticism is warranted in this case, and that that's just as likely the reason for the opinions being expressed as is some general proclivity among potential jurors. People don't trust the government, and they don't trust the media - with very good reason. When they are asked a direct question by an official source about 9/11, they cannot bring themselves to lie about the degree of uncertainty they have. The view that "oh, well, people are always more skeptical in these circumstances" is hardly the only or most obvious explanation for this.
Finally, how depressing is it to hear people say that they try not to pay attention
to the news, or that Saddam Hussein may have been responsible for 9/11? It's
a good reminder of just how effective the propagandists have been at putting
us all to sleep. Ordinary human judgment, which has been under assault for decades
now, is showing signs of the pounding it's taken. It's as many people believe
that, 'hey, if I didn't see it, then all of the opinions on what happened are
equally possible.' That's a dangerous situation, but we're living in it.
Many potential jurors in the Jose Padilla terrorism-support case say they aren't sure who directed the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks because they don't trust reporters or the federal government.
"There are too many ifs, too many things going on," one male juror said. "I don't know the whole story."
Others say they just don't pay close enough attention to world events to be certain.
Fascist America, in 10 Easy Steps

Last
autumn, there was a military coup in Thailand. The leaders of the coup took
a number of steps, rather systematically, as if they had a shopping list. In
a sense, they did. Within a matter of days, democracy had been closed down --
the coup leaders declared martial law, sent armed soldiers into residential
areas, took over radio and TV stations, issued restrictions on the press, tightened
some limits on travel and took certain activists into custody.
They were not figuring these things out as they went along. If you look at history, you can see that there is essentially a blueprint for turning an open society into a dictatorship. That blueprint has been used again and again in more and less bloody, more and less terrifying ways. But it is always effective. It is very difficult and arduous to create and sustain a democracy, but history shows that closing one down is much simpler. You simply have to be willing to take the 10 steps.
As difficult as this is to contemplate, it is clear, if you are willing to look, that each of these 10 steps has already been initiated in the United States by the Bush administration.
Because Americans like me were born in freedom, we have a hard time even considering that it is possible for us to become as unfree, domestically, as many other nations. Because we no longer learn much about our rights or our system of government -- the task of being aware of the Constitution has been outsourced from citizens to professionals such as lawyers and professors -- we scarcely recognise the checks and balances that the founders put in place, even as they are being systematically dismantled. Because we don't learn much about European history, the setting up of a department of "homeland" security -- remember who else was keen on the word "homeland"? -- didn't raise the alarm bells it might have.
Making Martial Law Easier
It seems every federal failure these days becomes an excuse for expanding federal power. As James Bovard writes in the American Conservative, the Orwellian “Enforcement of the Laws to Restore Public Order Act” grants the President a new power to declare martial law in response to "“natural disaster, epidemic, or other serious public health emergency, terrorist attack or incident, or other condition”—and of course, what other "condition" that might be was not specified.
This new law discards 200 years of civil protections greatly limiting the use of the military on US soil - limitation which were committed to law in the Insurrection Act of 1807. As usual, virtually nothing critical was heard from our somnolent representatives in Congress. Every US Governor opposed the passage of this Act, and yet it passed the House 398-23 and flew through the Senate by a unanimous consent vote.
As Bovard states:
“Martial law” is a euphemism for military dictatorship. When foreign democracies are overthrown and a junta establishes martial law, Americans usually recognize that a fundamental change has occurred. Perhaps some conservatives believe that the only change when martial law is declared is that people are no longer read their Miranda rights when they are locked away. “Martial law” means obey soldiers’ commands or be shot.
Some Senators did speak out before the bill was passed, and two [Patrick Leahy, (D-VT) and Kit Bond (R-MO)] are currently sponsoring a bill to repeal the changes to the original law that have resulted in these new executive powers. They need our support.

04/25/07 "American Conservative" -- - How many pipe bombs might it take to end American democracy? Far fewer than it would have taken a year ago.
The Defense Authorization Act of 2006, passed on Sept. 30, empowers President George W. Bush to impose martial law in the event of a terrorist “incident,” if he or other federal officials perceive a shortfall of “public order,” or even in response to antiwar protests that get unruly as a result of government provocations.
9/11 FIREFIGHTER LUNG AILMENTS ON THE RISE
I hope you all get a chance to watch the 9/11 responders on "The View" on ABC @11.00AM this Wednesday the 25th. One of those responders will be Vito Valenti, a 9/11 volunteer, sick with fibrosis of the lungs and needs a double lung transplant. Vito also sits on the board of directors at the FealGood Foundation. I can only hope Rosie and the others do the right thing for these three heroes that day. April 22, 2007 -- Twenty-six firefighters who toiled at Ground Zero came down with sarcoidosis, an inflammatory illness that often attacks the lungs, in the five years after 9/11 - a significant increase, a new study has found.
The study has angered the Patrolmen's Benevolent Association, which complains that the NYPD has refused to acknowledge that 9/11 caused sarcoidosis in cops.
Court Ruling May Stop 9/11 Air Quality Lawsuits

(CBS/AP) NEW YORK An appeals court ruling could spell trouble for New Yorkers suing the Environmental Protection Agency and its former chief for saying that sooty Lower Manhattan air was safe to breathe after the Sept. 11 terror attacks.
A three judge panel of the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals declared this week that EPA Administrator Christine Todd Whitman and other agency officials can't be held constitutionally liable for making rosy declarations about air quality in the days following the World Trade Center's destruction.
The Terror Entrepreneurs
Former National Security Advisor Zbigniew Brzezinski comes out and says what should be obvious by now to anyone paying attention: the "War on Terror" is phony, and has succeeded only in bringing a 'culture of fear' to the US -- though not without financial benefit to those ready to profit from the fear.
Together, the government, media and entertainment industries have turned "the terror threat" into a nationwide entrepreneurial venture. Brzezinski writes that "(T)error entrepreneurs," whose never-ending task is to "convince the public that it faces new threats" have found a home on network television. Since "horror scenarios attract audiences," the corporate media give a respectable veneer to fear-mongering through the presentation of these terror "experts" and "consultants" to the public. All of this is happening in a cultural environment in which Islam and Arabs are being vilified for sport and profit.
We don't share Brzezinski's nostalgia for the Cold War, of course. When he says that "(T)he events of 9/11 could have resulted in a truly global solidarity against extremism and terrorism," he's purposely ignoring that the US, under his guidance, helped engineer the 'extremism and terrorism' of the Mujahedeen who fought the Soviet Union in Afghanistan during the 1970's and 1980's. He doesn't want peace, only a return to the 'softer' imperial policies of his own time in government. At bottom, he's just a ticked-off member of the ruling class.
With those rather substantial caveats, we recognize his willingness to point out the harm being done to US culture and his call for real leadership - though our ideas of what that would look like would undoubtedly differ greatly from his.
Terrorized by 'War on Terror': How a Three-Word Mantra Has Undermined America

The "war on terror" has created a culture of fear in America. The Bush administration's elevation of these three words into a national mantra since the horrific events of 9/11 has had a pernicious impact on American democracy, on America's psyche and on U.S. standing in the world. Using this phrase has actually undermined our ability to effectively confront the real challenges we face from fanatics who may use terrorism against us.
The damage these three words have done -- a classic self-inflicted wound -- is infinitely greater than any wild dreams entertained by the fanatical perpetrators of the 9/11 attacks when they were plotting against us in distant Afghan caves. The phrase itself is meaningless. It defines neither a geographic context nor our presumed enemies. Terrorism is not an enemy but a technique of warfare -- political intimidation through the killing of unarmed non-combatants.
Conservatives demand restoration of Constitution -- American Freedom Agenda
The American Freedom Agenda’s (AFA) mission is twofold: the enactment of a cluster of statutes that would restore the Constitution’s checks and balances as enshrined by the Founding Fathers; and, making the subject a staple of political campaigns and of foremost concern to Members of Congress and to voters and educators. Especially since 9/11, the executive branch has chronically usurped legislative or judicial power, and has repeatedly claimed that the President is the law. The constitutional grievances against the White House are chilling, reminiscent of the kingly abuses that provoked the Declaration of Independence.
The 10-point American Freedom Agenda would work to restore the roles of Congress and the federal judiciary to prevent such abuses of power and protect against injustices that are the signature of civilized nations. In particular, the American Freedom Agenda would:
