Against a backdrop of increasing public alarm over the power and reliability of corporate news sources, more than 300 progressive media activists, professionals and academics gathered in Santa Cruz over the weekend of Jan. 25-27. The task of the Independent Media Strategy Summit: to bust up corporate media domination by envisioning and launching a reliable, grassroots, equally powerful "main street media" alternative. So what happened and just how well did they do?

It's Friday morning, Jan. 25. I'm bending into a monsoon downpour, slogging toward Stevenson Hall on the Sonoma State University campus. I'm here to snag a ride to Santa Cruz. My backpack's weight shifts and shimmies, causing me to spaz out on the wet walkway. I nearly land on my ass, twice, before arriving at the office of media summit organizer and Project Censored chief Peter Phillips. Nobody's home. Down the hall I hear a radio weather guy say that six more inches of rain is heading for the Santa Cruz Mountains by noon, which is exactly when we're to cross them. Peter Phillips walks up the hallway and asks me if I'm John.

They realize their topic is big; its implications disturbing, but they are compelled by inner conviction.

On Tuesday nights in downtown Wayne, since Jan. 1, Betsy Metz, of Devon, and Jon Gold, of Plymouth Meeting have been sponsoring documentaries at the Wayne Theater that dispute the official explanations of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

They intend to show the videos through February and describe themselves as everyday citizens accruing out-of-pocket costs. Theirs is one effort among several around the country attempting to spur interest and they plan to donate all proceeds to the “FealGood Foundation.”

While, as with any controversy, there are those who discount the credibility of its proponents, their movement has grown, and continues to mount evidence asserting that the truth about the attacks was deliberately concealed.

Included in their numbers are professional architects, structural engineers, physicists, college professors, airline pilots, military officials, journalists, New York firefighters, emergency service personnel, government officials and workers from many levels, and more.

A local 9/11 truth organization founded by two Monadnock Region college students is gaining worldwide attention.

And the New Hampshire primary played a leading role in the accomplishments of Student Scholars for 9/11 Truth.

“We were able to get almost every presidential candidate on video describing their stances on the 9/11 Commission investigation,” said co-founder Justin A. Martell, a junior at Franklin Pierce University.

Martell and Keene State College junior Michael E. Jackman launched the organization in 2006.

The off-the-cuff video interviews with presidential hopefuls were posted on the Internet, and some have been viewed by more than 30,000 people worldwide, according to Martell.

Former Democratic Rep. Cynthia McKinney Seeks Presidency as Green Party Nominee

Former Democratic Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney is now seeking the presidency as a Green Party hopeful. McKinney was the first African American woman elected to Congress in Georgia. She is among the most outspoken critics of the Bush administration and one of her her last measures in office was to introduce a bill for the impeachment of President Bush and Vice President Cheney. She joins to talk about her new campaign and why she left the Democratic Party after more than a decade in public office.

But McKinney’s history of opposing war predates this Bush administration. In 1991 she spoke out against the Persian Gulf war in the Georgia House of Representatives. But McKinney left the Democratic Party late last year—after serving six terms in Congress. She said the Democrats had become “no different than their Republican counterparts.” Today she hopes to be the Green Party nominee for President.

The official story of 9/11 is riddled with internal contradictions. One of these contradictions involves the question of how long President Bush remained in classroom in Sarasota, Florida, on the morning of 9/11.

Bush was there to publicize his education policy by being photographed listening to students read. He arrived at the school at 8:55 AM, at which time he reportedly first learned that a plane had struck one of the Twin Towers. Dismissing the crash as an accident, Bush said that they would go ahead and “do the reading thing anyway.”

Bush entered the second-grade classroom of teacher Sandra Kay Daniels at about 9:03. At about 9:06, the president’s chief of staff, Andrew Card, came in and whispered in Bush’s ear, telling him, Card later reported, “A second plane hit the second Tower. America is under attack.”

Written in the exciting, cloak-and-dagger style of Tom Clancy, the novel -- The Shell Game -- has a shot at educating a large segment of the American public who would otherwise remain in the dark about some aspects of 9/11.

Alten is well-aware of media censorship of 9/11 truth (for example, he agrees with this analysis, he also sent me an advance copy of the book), and is trying to break through the media blockade using his resume as bestselling author to spread his message.

I just finished reading The Shell Game, and caught up with Alten by email.

GW: I really like The Shell Game, Steve. It had me on the edge of my seat, and I stayed up later than I should have a couple of nights to finish it.

SA: My books tend to be ... page-turners. The Shell Game does that and adds another twist ... it's all real, or it predicts what may really happen unless we stop the insanity. To stop it you must first be aware of it.
