Specter, Leahy question use of 9/11 fund moneyWASHINGTON: Two senators want to know why a $1 billion Sept. 11 insurance fund appropriated by Congress to help ailing ground zero workers has not been used to compensate those exposed to harmful substances. Senate Judiciary Chairman Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., and the committee's ranking Republican, Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania, said in a letter to the insurance company overseeing the Sept. 11 health-related claims that they are considering convening a hearing in September. "Reports that the World Trade Center Captive Insurance Company has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on salaries on administrators and over $45 million to private law firms are troubling," the letter said.

Gonzales, Pelosi, and the Survival of CongressSpeaker Nancy Pelosi said today that if she were not Speaker she would probably back impeachment. Other Congress Members are of course free to do what even she admits she would do in their position. They should, I think, start taking her advice and ignoring her ban on impeachment. The reason Pelosi is being questioned about impeachment has to do with Gonzo, Alberto Gonzales, and a proposal just introduced to impeach him. In the movement to impeach Cheney and Bush, is this a distraction or an opening act?

NSA Spying Part of Broader EffortThe Bush administration's chief intelligence official said yesterday that President Bush authorized a series of secret surveillance activities under a single executive order in late 2001. The disclosure makes clear that a controversial National Security Agency program was part of a much broader operation than the president previously described. The disclosure by Mike McConnell, the director of national intelligence, appears to be the first time that the administration has publicly acknowledged that Bush's order included undisclosed activities beyond the warrantless surveillance of e-mails and phone calls that Bush confirmed in December 2005.

WHAT TO DO? WHAT TO DO? Taking Action In The Face Of CollapseRemember: There are no "solutions" but only options as the fascist empire concretizes around us. Part of the empire's agenda is to keep you, like a dog chasing its tail, looking for solutions and bashing people who don't offer them to you but tell you the truth instead-that the future of you and your loved ones is entirely in your hands and no one else's. The sooner you let go of your illusions about avoiding collapse and someone or something being able to prevent and cure it, the more energy you will free up to act on behalf of yourself and your tribe.

Was Tillman Murdered? AP Gets New DocumentsFor over three years now, the family of Patrick Tillman--who gave up his career in pro football shortly after 9/11 to "fight al Qaeda and help find Osama bin Laden"--has been demanding to know the truth of what happened to him after having been lied to by this government. A September, 2005 article in the San Francisco Chronicle hoped a "New inquiry [by the Pentagon's Inspector General] may expose events that led to Pat Tillman’s death." Nearly two years after that "investigation," we finally learn Tillman was shot three times, in close proximity, in the forehead, with an M-16 from merely 10 yards away--execution style. And that Army attorneys bragged in emails that they had shut down any real investigation. And that a three-star Army General "did not recall"--70 times--his actions on that day. To add insult to injury, more outrageous is the Pentagon's response--"preparing a new round of punishments," including a "stinging demotion" of this retired Lieutenant General. While thousands of Americans languish in prison for such 'heinous' misdeeds as possessing marijuana, this General will be stung with a demotion... This information has finally become public only because the Associated Press filed a Freedom of Information Act request with the Department of Defense forced them to release details. Not surprisingly, on July 13 the Seattle Times reported, "The White House has refused to give Congress documents about the death of former NFL player Pat Tillman, with White House counsel Fred Fielding saying that certain papers relating to discussion of the friendly-fire shooting "implicate Executive Branch confidentiality interests. ... White House and Pentagon officials have turned over about 10,000 pages of material, but Waxman and Davis said those papers lack critical documents that would show communications between senior administration officials and top military officers shortly after Tillman was killed in Afghanistan in 2004. Waxman and Davis plan another hearing on Aug. 1." (White House Rebuffs Congress on Tillman Papers) The underlying question is, of course: If this government will publicly lie, even to a grieving family and millions of football fans, and go to such great lengths to concoct an entirely fake story, including posthumously issuing a "Silver Star medal for bravery, saying that 'through the firing Tillman’s voice was heard issuing fire commands to take the fight to the enemy on the dominating high ground', exact a highly coordinated cover up of wrong-doing, and refuse to hold murderers accountable in a situation this blatant, what else might they be lying about? What other stories might they have concocted? What other medals might have been issued based on fake stories? What other "investigation" reports may not have included testimony of eyewitnesses, and issued similar blatantly false yet politically expedient findings? – Ed.
SAN FRANCISCO Army medical examiners were suspicious about the close proximity of the three bullet holes in Pat Tillman's forehead and tried without success to get authorities to investigate whether the former NFL player's death amounted to a crime, according to documents obtained by The Associated Press. "The medical evidence did not match up with the, with the scenario as described," a doctor who examined Tillman's body after he was killed on the battlefield in Afghanistan in 2004 told investigators. Related: "The Ballad of Pat Tillman", a tribute by balladeer Vic Sadot ."So remember Patrick Tillman when those flags are all displayed How the Empire stole 'Old Glory' for a fear and hate parade Yes, remember Patrick Tillman, the many like him lies have made And Hell has no fury like a patriot betrayed!"

Dangers of a Cornered George BushBy Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity & Dr. Justin Frank July 27, 2007 Editor’s Note: As the nation and the world face 18 more months of George W. Bush’s presidency, a chilling prospect is that Bush – confronted with more defeats and reversals – might just “lose it” and undertake even more reckless military adventures. In this special memorandum, the Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity (VIPS) collaborated with psychiatrist Justin Frank, author of Bush on the Couch, to assess the potential dangers and possible countermeasures available to constrain Bush: Recent events have put a great deal more pressure on President George W. Bush, who has shown little regard for the constitutional system bequeathed to us by the Founders. Having bragged about being commander in chief of the “first war of the 21st century,” one he began under false pretenses, success in Iraq is now a pipedream.

Congressman Denied Access To Post-Attack Continuity PlansWashington - Constituents called Rep. Peter DeFazio's office, worried there was a conspiracy buried in the classified portion of a White House plan for operating the government after a terrorist attack. As a member of the House Committee on Homeland Security, DeFazio, D-Ore., is permitted to enter a secure "bubbleroom" in the Capitol and examine classified material. So he asked the White House to see the secret documents.

By Ray McGovern What do Rep. John Conyers, D-Michigan, chair of the House Committee on the Judiciary, and President George W. Bush have in common? They both think they can dis Cindy Sheehan and count on gossip columnists like the Washington Post’s Dana Milbank to trivialize a historic moment. I’ll give this to President Bush. He makes no pretence when he disses. He would not meet with Sheehan to define for her the “noble cause” for which her son Casey died or tell her why he had said it was “worth it.” Conyers, on the other hand, was dripping with pretence as he met with Sheehan, Rev. Lennox Yearwood and me Monday in his office in the Rayburn building. I have seldom been so disappointed with someone I had previously held in high esteem. And before leaving, I told him so.

Impeach Now: Or Face the End of Constitutional DemocracyCan't get much clearer than this ...
– Ed.
By PAUL CRAIG ROBERTS Unless Congress immediately impeaches Bush and Cheney, a year from now the US could be a dictatorial police state at war with Iran. Bush has put in place all the necessary measures for dictatorship in the form of "executive orders" that are triggered whenever Bush declares a national emergency. Recent statements by Homeland Security Chief Michael Chertoff, former Republican senator Rick Santorum and others suggest that Americans might expect a series of staged, or false flag, "terrorist" events in the near future. Many attentive people believe that the reason the Bush administration will not bow to expert advice and public opinion and begin withdrawing US troops from Iraq is that the administration intends to rescue its unpopular position with false flag operations that can be used to expand the war to Iran.
