Mystery surrounds prison death of terrorist whose testimony was key to Iraq invasionAustalia's Sunday Herald has just printed a significant article on the death
of Ibn al-Sheikh al-Libi, "Curveball," on the basis of whose tortured
testimony justification for the Iraq War was based. Al-Libi had been visited
by a human rights group representative immediately before his "suicide"
in a Libyan prison. To date, this incredibly important story is strikingly under-reported in the corporate American media, even though we now know "[t]he fact he lied 'to avoid torture' was verified by 'a bipartisan report of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence,' according to a press release Monday on Al-Libi's death by Human Rights Watch (HRW)." We have also posted below excellent reporting from Jeff Kaye, blogger at Firedoglake.com. (Sincere thanks go out to so many great, GREAT investigative reporters like this now blogging tirelessly so we get at least some glimpse of what's going on in the world!!) And for more information, we previously posted Andy Worthington and Brad Friedman's important reporting
on this.

May 20, 2009 INTERNATIONAL INVESTIGATION: Islamist dies in Tripoli shortly after human rights group visit from Fred Bridgland in Libya THE ISLAMIST terrorist who was the key source of the false intelligence used to trigger the US and UK 2003 military invasion of Iraq has been found dead in a Libyan prison cell. Ibn al-Sheikh al-Libi allegedly commited suicide by hanging in the prison where he was being held in the Libyan capital, Tripoli. His death followed a visit by a team from Human Rights Watch, one of the world's leading independent organisations dedicated to defending and protecting human rights. ---------------------------Investigating an Embarrassment: More Questions on Al-Libi’s Torture,
Death The news of the death by possible suicide of former CIA "ghost prisoner", Ali Mohamed al-Fakheri, also known as Ibn al-Sheikh al-Libi, has caused only a small murmur in the U.S. press. The Washington Post's Peter Finn wrote a story on it Monday, noting the key fact that it was the tortured confession of al-Libi in an Egyptian prison, where he had been rendered by the U.S. and subjected to beatings and mock burial, that was used by then-Secretary of State Colin Powell in his February 2003 presentation to the UN as evidence that Iraq was in league with the Al Qaeda terrorists and/or interested in using WMD. Bmaz made this point the other night when writing on the initial reports of al-Libi's death. Marcy Wheeler, in a new article, notes some suspicious matters concerning the timing of the events. The newly breaking story has also now been picked up by McClatchy (H/T Perris). Both Marcy and the McClatchy article note the "relentless pressure" put on interrogators to find some link between Al Qaeda and Saddam. Powell's claims that Al Qaeda had been trained in chemical and biological weaponry by Saddam Hussein's regime was a key element of the U.S. drive to invade and occupy Iraq. But al-Libi recanted this story in January 2004. According to the Washington Post, the Defense Intelligence Agency and some CIA analysts weren't apparently convinced. The fact he lied "to avoid torture" was verified by "a bipartisan report of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence," according to a press release Monday on Al-Libi's death by Human Rights Watch (HRW).

History Of Staged Terrorism Exposed In German Mainstream MediaThe conservative german Süddeutsche Zeitung on April 4 published an remarkable article within a series on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of NATO. excerpts and summary here: Underground Troops In Nato Countries - Guerilla For The State It was a secret of many Nato member countries.
Underground armies were existing to fight in the case of
a Soviet invasion in guerrilla fashion. The trails lead
back into the 1950s - NATO is still blocking the facts. The article goes in great detail into the history of Gladio, its connections with former german SS troops and plans to blow up bridges and other strategic infrastructures in case of an soviet invasion after WW2. The story the "Stay behind Army" was blown open in 1952 when members of the underground groups informed police and the scandal first made the news. This lead to a politcal uproar when it is revealed that a list of numerous well known german personalities exited who were planned to have been killed in case of an emergency situation. The list included communists as well as social democrats and the state interior minister of the german state of Hessen. Several people were arrested when the list was discovered. German chancellor Adenauer claimed to have not known anything about the activities at the time. The US High Commissioner Walter Donnelly claimed the group was about to be dissolved in the same month when the arrests occurred. The Süddeutsche Zeitung article then reports that after a ruling of the german constitutional court the arrested members were released in the same month.

Dutch TV show exonerates Osama bin Laden'Devil's Advocate' jury finds no proof he was behind Sept. 11 By Scott Roxborough Photo:
Hollywoodreporter.comBERLIN -- A Dutch TV jury has found Osama bin Laden not guilty of the Sept. 11 attacks. In the conclusion Wednesday night to the show "Devil's Advocate" on Dutch public broadcaster Nederland 2, the jury of two men and three women, along with the studio audience, ruled there was no proof bin Laden was the mastermind behind the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon in 2001. The Netherlands, home to "Big Brother" creator Endemol, is known for being on the cutting edge of format-based television. But even for Dutch standards, "Devil's Advocate," from Amsterdam production house AVRO, pushes the envelope.

Heated Controversy: Do firefighters believe 9/11 conspiracy theories?By Christopher Beam April 8, 2009 Slate.com
In the new season of the FX drama Rescue Me, firefighter Franco Rivera espouses the belief that 9/11 was "an inside job." According to a Sunday New York Times article, the show's writers added this assertion because actor Daniel Sunjata is a "truther"; but the real firefighters on set—who work as script advisers—were offended by his allegations. This got the Explainer wondering: Do any firefighters believe in 9/11 conspiracy theories? Yes. There's no evidence that firefighters buy into 9/11 conspiracy theories at higher rates than the rest of the population. (A 2007 Zogby poll found that 26 percent of Americans believe the government "let it happen." A 2006 Scripps-Howard poll found it was more than a third.) But some firemen do believe the government was behind 9/11 and use their status as first responders to draw attention to their statements.
