Quarantine in the National Security State

Given the recently published National Security Presidential Directive making the President the sole decision-maker (essentially the dictator) in case of any “catastrophic emergency,” and repeated assurances from the CDC that “the pandemic IS coming,” it would behoove us to take note of how cases such as the recently hyped “TB scare” are being handled. More often than not, basic civil liberties are completely thrown out the window in favor of “public safety.” What”s most alarming about this is the utter lack of outcry from the general public; in fact, if one reads the comments following some of these TB stories, Americans are actually begging for more intrusive invasions into our private lives in exchange for “a little temporary safety.”

“…even during times of crisis governments cannot discard their commitment to core values such as civil liberties. Emergency authority must not go unchecked. Public health authorities make mistakes. And, these mistakes could have serious consequences for individuals’ freedom, privacy, and equality.” (From the ACLU statement on the CDC”s proposed rules on the quarantine of travelers).
