This starkly realistic editorial from Buzzflash considers potential ramifications of the Military Commissions Act of 2006, reminding us of relatively recent South American history following a similarly tragic path. Given the many examples of the repercussions of unbridled power in just the last century of history, this editor asks, “What will it take for us to rise to the occasion, America? Must history repeat because we refuse to learn from the past?”
The Center for Constitutional Rights has already filed litigation against parts of this legislation, on October 2, 2006. CCR Executive Director Vincent Warren said: “Last week, Congress voted to have the United States join the ranks of the nations of the world that have authorized indefinite detention without trial and torture without accountability. For over two hundred years, our Constitution has guaranteed that we would not sacrifice our democratic principles even in times of crisis. In this first challenge to the MCA, we demand that the Administration uphold the Constitution which has, and should continue to be, the pillar of living in a democratic society.”
This is but one example of resistance, and we encourage readers to be aware of and support every effort to stop the imminent threats of this constitutional crisis. Talk to your neighbors (how will we stand together if we don’t even know each other?). Hold community meetings and inform others of what’s going on. Put your money to work supporting truthtellers and organizations fighting for us–time to take every penny back from the war machine and the liars. Read. Think. Discuss. Act. Now is the time.
