We nominate the following, published in New York Newsday on Feb. 18, for Letter to the Editor of the Month. It addresses the poisoning of New York in the aftermath of September 11, but the memorable last paragraph speaks to something even greater. How many letters of this kind must a major paper receive, before it publishes even one?
The toxic air at Ground Zero
Regarding “Judge: Ex-EPA chief sent people back to lower Manhattan too soon” (Newsday.com, Feb. 2), it’s about time someone saw that what Christine Todd Whitman did as environmental protection chief was criminal: lying about the safety of 9/11 air quality.
Prison time and steep fines against her personal wealth to (partially) recompense victims’ kin would only be a first step.
Remember, she lied at the direction of her bosses. I hope I live long enough to see a Nuremberg-style trial for the whole group of Bush conspirators.
