I'm sure General Hayden would like us to take him at his word. But who on earth will believe the CIA has 'reformed' itself, when even the mainstream press reports blatantly illegal acts like extraordinary rendition? The worst abuses we never hear about.
The unfortunate truth is that the prescriptive atmosphere in Washington permits ANY abuse of human and civil rights so long as it 'advances' the 'war on terror'. According to this sick mindset, anything LESS than torturing, kidnapping, illegally surveilling and stripping people of their basic human rights would be doing 'less than everything' we could to fight terror! It's true legacy is to radicalize hundreds of thousands of potential terrorists and to ensure that Americans are hated for generations to come.
'The Muckraker Report's FOIA request for the documents proving the chain of custody of the so-called "bin Laden confession video" has produced additional circumstantial evidence that the video may have been the product of a CIA sting effort on or about September 26, 2001. If true, this is an incredibly important finding, as the official story concerning the video claims the videotape was obtained by U.S. forces in Jalalabad, Afghanistan in late November 2001. It's been forty years since the unprovoked attack by Israel on the USS Liberty, in which 34 servicemen were killed and more than 100 were injured. Most Americans have never even heard of this event, and the official whitewash of the true story still haunts many of the survivors as well as the servicemen who pushed for an honest inquiry.
What did Cindy Sheehan do, exactly, to deserve the hostile reception she received from the many Democrats who criticized her?
She began to hold the Democrats to the same standard she held Republicans to. Once one does that, of course, very soon one will stop supporting the Democratic Party, and very soon the Party will stop supporting you.
Sheehan is a true patriot. No single US person has done more to call into question the justification for the attack on Iraq than she has. And she's right about America. Right now it doesn't want her help.

Consortium News' Robert Parry discusses some of the new 9/11 revelations in George Tenet's memoir, "At the Center of the Storm". We learn that Tenet went to Crawford, TX in late August 2001 and interrupted W's vacation because of the confidence he had in the intelligence pointing to an imminent terrorist attack. The president was apparently unmoved. This was Tenet's first visit to the ranch, and he reports that his conversation with the president descended into Tenet's "trying to make small talk about the flora and the fauna, none of which were native to Queens."
This meeting took place about two weeks before Andrew Card whispers into Bush's ear at Booker Elementary School, and that strange look of recognition dawned on the president's face.

It's for reasons like the subject of this article that the US wants to drive Hugo Chavez from power. The US-abetted failed coup attempt of a few years ago was simply the continuation of a long policy of destabilization of countries who dare to defy US "guidance" on economic matters. Defying the US with respect to the nationalization of oil is a particularly cardinal sin.
This time, however, the coup didn't work. An emboldened and strengthened Chavez emerged from it to become the face of the South American resistance movement. This long-awaited move to re-nationalize the nation's oil industry is critical for breaking the grip of corporate rule and returning true national sovereignty to Venezuela.
We know another country that needs to restore its national sovereignty.
A fawning media yields many unhappy consequences, including the loss of concern among government officials that their crimes will be correctly contextualized for presentation to the public. They need not worry, because the corporte media has contracted the same disease infecting politicians: a malignant inability to identify with the public.
Poor George Tenet: he's worried about his reputation. In another world, he might be worried that he participated in a criminal deception that destroyed a country of 24 million and gotten hundreds of thousands killed.
Bravo to the Winnipeg Sun and John Gleeson for addressing the need "for an independent, preferably international investigation into 9/11." Thank you notes are in order.
